School: Bao La Primary – Secondary school, Hoa Binh Province
A team of students from Bao La Primary-Secondary School in Hoa Binh Province has developed a smart waste bin using artificial intelligence (AI) to address the challenge of littering and pollution.
This system uses several key features:
Image recognition and AI-based classification: A camera captures images of discarded items, which are then sent to Scratch AI for analysis. This AI technology categorises the waste (e.g. plastic, paper, etc.) to enable proper disposal.
Automatic lid control and level monitoring: Based on the waste category identified by the AI, the Micro:bit controller automatically opens the lid for users to deposit the item. In addition, the system monitors the bin’s fill level and can send alerts when it is nearing capacity.
